Idiopathic Hypertrophic Sub-aortic Stenosis (IHHS) is one. Here’s a good website: http://www.medfamily.org.

Atriovetricular Septal Defect (AVD) is another. Here’s another good website for you: http://www.emedicine.com

Both of these defects can be treated medically and sometimes surgically, but IHHS is usually the cause when a young athlete dies suddenly while playing sports or during physical exertion.

A moderate to severe amount of mitral valve regurgitation (the valve between your right atrium and right ventricle) alongside left to right shunting in AVD can be fatal in infants and young children. Severe MVR (mitral valve regurgitation) in AVD leads to CHF (congestive heart failure) and is fatal if left untreated.

I would think any congenital heart defect could be an underlying cause. With researching my daughter’s heart defect, this is most often the cause of death in young athletes as so many go undiagnosed for years. Many times it is an undiagnosed arrithymia which may be connected to a CHD. Its hard to say, but there are many possibilities.
